Innovative products that are changing the future of homes

We are in a technological revolution with the introduction of drones, artificial intelligence and self-driving cars becoming a reality. So it's no surprise that our industry is seeing innovation in building materials and new products that challenge the traditional way of doing things.

Don't be left in the past! Here are a few of the innovative and cool products that you need to know about that is gaining momentum with homeowners.

Paint that prevents mould and wood damage -  There are numerous innovations in paint. One of them is a new interior latex primer/sealer that Sherwin-Willams offers called Moisture Vapor Barrier. It's a quick-drying coating designed to help reduce the loss of moisture through walls and ceilings. The formula combines a primer and finish into a single, cost-effective solution intended to address moisture mould problems common in manufactured housing facilities. Most importantly, it helps address common and potentially costly mould and wood damage.

Insulated concrete forms – Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) are stay-in-place forms that offer a variety of benefits when building a new home, like saving on energy costs by more efficiently heating and cooling a home. The forms usually consist of two panels of Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) foam that are connected and then steel reinforced and filled with concrete, which completes the building envelope of a home in one building step saving a lot of time on a project.

One manufacturer of ICF is NUDURA Forms. They claim to provide energy solutions by providing Performance Values up to R-50 resulting in energy savings of up to 70% when compared to traditional wood building methods. The superior Performance Value comes from the stable thermal mass that the concrete provides. NUDURA offers form sizes that provide a solid concrete core of up to 12” (304 mm), providing maximum energy efficiency, strength and comfort. You can read more about Nudura here.

Innovations in metal roofing – While metal roofing isn't new, innovations in the metal shingle roofing industry have made them increasingly popular. Instead of a flat, sheet metal look, you can now buy products that are stamped to look like standard shingles, slate, wood shakes, and tile. Another recent development in shingle technology has been paint coatings. The benefits of metal roofing include long service lives, easy installation, and little maintenance over traditional roofing materials.

Westman Steel is one manufacturer that carries metal shingles in a variety of styles. You can learn more here.

Whether it's saving time on a project or offering energy efficiency, these are only a few of the many innovations that promise to revolutionize the way we build homes for the future.
